It's almost March. Time to change gears and think about summer in Glacier Park. I have received a lot of inquiries about the remodeling efforts at The Many Glacier Hotel and how this affects summer lodging and my evening shows. Well, like the old saying goes, "The show must go on!" - and it is no different in Many Glacier.

I will start my performances this year on June 17 and run through September 12. Every Monday - Saturday at 9:00 pm, downstairs in the St. Moritz Room. Hopefully my stage will still be intact, but if not, we will make it work and I promise an evening of wonderful Montana music and imagery to share with you while you visit Many Glacier. Tickets remain at $8.00 per person which is still one of the greatest deals in the Park, if I do say so. You can purchase them either at the door or in advance from my friends at GPI, Central Reservations 406.892.2525

For the full hotel remodeling Q & A here is the link from my friends at Glacier Park Inc. http://www.glacierparkinc.com/

See you in Glacier soon. Always, David

Ear Worms...

For some reasons I've been creating these really cool and melodic kid songs in my head. My kids love them, in fact, my little girl Jadi had me sing to her first grade class just so she could have her friends hear them. Like I've said before, I don't know where all my songs come from, they just sort of start coming out. Sometimes the lyrics come before the melody, other times I have this cool guitar lick but no lyrics to guide them. Either way, the melody & words usually find a way to fit together and out pops a song.

Someone once told me that those little musical diddies that just repeat over and over in your head, like the Batman theme or Gilligan's Island, they are called Ear Worms. I like that.

We'll I've been having several worms squirming around my head lately. Now that I'm back in the Fish, I thought the best way to get them out of my head was to record them. So over the next few days, I'm going to sit out in my studio and put a guitar & vocal track down. I'll find a way to post them either on this web page or Facebook or whatever. And let me know what you think. Like - Dislike - Add this line - Take out this - Whatever?! Share>

And if you have an ear worm you want to share with me. Send me an email, blog response, text, twitter, facebook, or whatever social media suits your fancy.

FISH ON!
October Musings

So I'm not such a consistent blogger. I guess I'd rather put the words in lyrics - which drives me to my next point.

I've been able , despite all the cabin construction, to write a few more tunes. I never have any intention to where these songs go, I just sort of let them come out the way they want. But I found myself writing kids songs. Maybe because I was missing my kids like crazy, who knows, but these songs about frogs, bears, Chicken Head Joe, dreams - wow! I must need to write a kids album. Maybe have a kids book along with my music. Now that would be cool.

I packed up the Mallard ( 24' travel trailer - home away from home ) hitched it to the back of the pick up, headed over the pass to the west and arrived home to Whitefish.

It's been a good summer. I am looking forward to winter spent home with family. And who knows, maybe I'll finish the kids CD & post it to the web site. Keep looking for it.

See ya'll on the trail- David

We have a family of foxes that live up the road from the lodge. These guys are hard to see but every once in a while they come out of hiding and let me know they are still around. I love these kinds of neighbors. And my wife's maiden name is Fox, so it's like we are all family around here.

Wood Floors, Hearth & Montana Mystic

Since my last entry, I have been too busy to keep you updated. The wood floors have been properly sitting inside adjusting to the inside space. My buddy, Travis, who, lucky for me lives down the road and is a skilled carpenter, is helping me set the floors. Wood is beautiful. It is just as beautiful inside as it is outside. I really appreciate each grain from the individual boards and the worm holes give it the cabin feeling I love. Travis is just grateful that he isn't working with polystyrene, which is what we built the house with. I gotta agree. I like working with wood. My wife would say it is the element that connects me.

The challenging part was setting the floor around the hearth. I made the hearth out of the same Chief Mountain stone as the lodge. I also decided to do something "artsy" and make a Chief Mountain scene. For those of you who have been to Glacier County, Chief Mountain The mountain is one of the most prominent peaks and rock formations along the Rocky Mountain Front. It is the view from my front window. And it is awesome. Here is the hearth - and check out the floors! Wood, stone, mountains, these are definitely my elements. ~ David

another day - another moose bull

You see the commute should be the extension of your job. In my case, as I have said before, the commute into The Many Glacier Hotel, is one of the best parts of my job. (Of course, the best part is singing to you fine folks every night.)

Last night's commute from my trailer to the hotel was nothing unusal except extraordinary. The random bull moose off the roadside eating his dinner. So once again, I stop in the middle of road, turn off the truck and watch. I am helpless when it comes to wildlife. It amazes me when a car drives right by, blissfully unaware that they just passed one of nature's amazing creatures, just feet from their front door.

I had this experience a few years back that blew my mind. My family & I had just finished up my last show of the summer season and we were driving behind some friends heading out of Many Glacier. It was about midnight the night was pitch black, and the stars glittered like diamonds. Beautiful.

My friend pulled over to the side and we followed. We got out of our cars not saying a word, surrounded by thick trees that bordered the road and listened to the still of the night. My friend, Lew, then pulled out his elk bugle and interrupted the silence with a loud elk call. We waited a minute. And then, omg!! The bull elk that were standing right behind those trees answered back.....and then another one not 20 feet away from our car...and then right behind us another responded. And then another bull answered off in the distance. My wife, JJ, started laughing, thrilled with this new music that now erupted from the forest. The kids freaked and ran back into the safety of the van afraid of an elk stampede. And I just stood there - dumbfounded. I drove that evening commute back to the trailer every night, and I never knew those elk were right there, next to the road in the trees. Needless to say, now my commute at night is just as mindful as it is when I can "see" during the day.

The Commute...

As I was commuting into work last night which, by the way, is the best part of my job. I stopped along the main road to watch a bear down by Lake Sherburne. Now let me add something here about Montana traffic. Gridlock here in Montana is a bit different, than say Atlanta. There is not a whole lot of road rage here but it is the wildlife that makes people slow down and stop in the middle of the road, despite the line of cars behind you.

So I parked my truck on the road and just watched this bear for a spell. Soon he started making his way back to the road, towards my truck. Sure enough, he walked right next to me, stopped, raised up on his hind legs, sniffed the Tundra, looked me in the eye and grunted as if to say - Hi Dave, good to see you again - and then swaggered back into the woods.

Of course my camera sat next to me unopened in its case. I started my truck and continued my commute to work, which like I said, is the best part of my job.
