VERSE A My agent called me up one day and said Dave I got this gig
Somewhere down south of Coeur d’ Alene
I don’t know much about it but the pay’s real good
And they said they’d feed you and had a place for you to stay
VERSE B It’s a private resort they call Full Moon Meadows
Sounds like there’s quite a lot to do
They got fishing and hiking, sailing and swimming
The even got a couple of hot tubs too
VERSE C So I drove all day I pulled up to the gate
And a voice said come on inside
I drove down to the lodge and when I opened the door
Everybody yelled surprise
CHORUS ‘Cause he was and she was everyone but me was
Naked as an old Jaybird
Big ones, small ones, short and tall ones
Naked as an old Jaybird
VERSE A The owners introduced themselves as Grand Maw and Grand Paw
They said we are so happy to have you hear as our guest
Dinner’s going to be ready in just about an hour
So ‘till then come in and mingle with the rest
VERSE B We stood around in our flip-flops
Talking about the finer things in life
It’s funny how well you get to know some folks
When you always looking them in the eye
CHORUS (repeat)
Grand Maw and Grand Paw and all the in-laws
Don’t get me wrong I’ve got nothing against the natural scene
But even Adam and Eve finally saw the need
To put a little LEAF ON THE TREE
VERSE A Shortly after dinner it was time to do a show
So everybody cozied up to the stage
I grabbed my guitar and searched my mind
For just the right words to say
VERSE B I introduced myself, how’s everybody doing
It’s good to see all-of-you tonight
Just sit back, relax and enjoy the show
And for God sake get the lights
CHORUS (repeat)
Young ones, old ones, hot and cold ones
I’ve been around this great big world
And I thought I’d seen everything
And now that I’ve seen all I ever want to see
Could you put a little LEAF ON THE TREE, please
VERSE A Well I know everybody’s wondering did I ever take the plunge
Some how summon up the nerve
‘Cause when you been hanging out with a bunch of naked people
Yea, it’s the clothes that become absurd
VERSE B But I said my goodbyes and I jumped in my van
And I headed on down the road
Then I pulled off to the side and slipped in the back
And I pulled of all my clothes
CHORUS Now he was and she was and little old me was
Naked as an old Jaybird
Just driving down the road doing a one man show
Naked as an old jaybird
Don’t get me wrong I ain’t about to join the nudie scene
I just had to know how it felt to be free
Without a little LEAF ON THE TREE
